T.I. and Tiny Bag $71 Million Victory After Lengthy Legal Battle With Toy Company They Say Ripped Off OMG Girlz
T.I. and Tiny are looking at a decidedly sizable payday in their lawsuit against a toy company they say violated intellectual property rights related to the OMG Girlz, a group originally founded back in 2009.
The case, notably, dates back to 2020, with subsequent updates over the years building to the latest trial, the third in this case. In short, MGA Entertainment was accused of ripping off the OMG Girlz group with dolls from its L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. line. Per a report from the Daily Journal, a federal jury found that MGA should pay over $71 million, just under $18 million of which is for damages, to T.I. and Tiny and related parties.
“They had the courage to stand up to the big corporate bully and say do the right thing, don’t steal from creatives,” attorney John Keville told reporters, adding that he was “so proud” of the group, which counts Tiny’s daughter Zonnique Pullins among its members.
In comments provided to Rolling Stone’s Nancy Dillon on Monday, Tiny said the jurors had done “more than I thought they would” with their decision. T.I., meanwhile, echoed Keville’s assessment of this victory serving as a win for artists at large.
“I think justice was served,” he said.
Complex has reached out to legal reps for both sides of this years-long court battle. This story may be updated.
While the $71 million figure is indeed massive, preeminent legal journalist Meghann Cuniff explained in her recent piece on the case that an even bigger judgment is possible in the days ahead. Read more here.
Following their return last year with “Lover Boy,” released through Pretty Hustle Music Group, OMG Girlz have continued their resurgence with a recent run of tour dates and a follow-up single, “Motion,” released last month.
