Mannie Fresh Says He Accidentally Made the Hook for “Who Let the Dogs Out”
Mannie Fresh claims that he wrote the hook to “Who Let The Dogs Out” by the Baha Men — by accident.
In a resurfaced clip from a few months ago, Fresh sat down with Nyla Simone on the We Need To Talk podcast and shared how that hook came to be.
“I was programming something in the studio and the dudes who made that song, they walked in like, ‘Bro, could you help us with a song?’” Mannie recalled. “I was just like, ‘I’m busy doing something right now,’ and they were just like, ‘Give us a hook.’”
“So, I just go like ‘Who let the dogs out, who, who, who?’ and I closed the door like, ‘Man get the fuck out of here,'” continued Fresh, laughing. “And then the song came out and I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I was just saying this to get them out of the studio!’”
Fresh changed musical history with his help on the song. The track’s iconic refrain would go on to win the Grammy for Best Dance Recording at the Grammy Awards in 2001 as well as hit the Top 40 chart in the United States.
Fresh is all in on nostalgia lately. He recently appeared at WeezyAna Fest with Lil Wayne to perform as the Big Tymers with Birdman. At the same show, the Hot Boys reunited for the first time on stage in more than 15 years.
The show was so popular that now Lil Wayne has announced a second reunion show. On December 21, BG, Juvenile, Turk, and Lil Wayne will be joined by Fresh and Birdman for another exploration of the past that’ll be presented by Lil WeezyAna Fest.
