Doechii Calls Out Anti-LGBTQ Rhetoric While Accepting GLAAD Media Award: ‘I Am Disgusted’

Doechii made it clear she’s not rocking with the phobia revolving around the LGBTQ community during her speech while accepting the GLAAD Media Award.

On Thursday, Doechii added more hardware to her awards collection when she won the category for outstanding music artist at the annual ceremony. Former GLAAD Award recipients Lil Nas X and Maren Morris presented Doechii with the award, and she used the opportunity to speak about the win while also shining a light on the LGBTQ community.

“I am thrilled at being recognized with such a prestigious award by GLAAD and to be joining prior honorees such as Renee [Rapp], Lady Gaga, Lil Nas X, Sam Smith and Janelle Monáe,” she said. “This is a huge and special moment as well because GLAAD is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, which is super fab.”

Doechii then highlighted how GLAAD promotes “acceptance, inclusiveness, and empowerment” before going into the state of the country and how the LGBTQ community is here to stay and thrive.

“Those are the same things I strongly believe in and advocate for and that continue to propel me forward — especially now that hard-won cultural change and rights for transgender people and the LGBTQ community have been threatened,” she said. “And I am disgusted. Disgusted. But I want to say that we are here and we are not going anywhere.”

She added, “[Do] not let anyone ever block your dreams … I just want to encourage you guys to stay connected with one another. Stay passionate. Stay focused. Keep your chin up. Be kind, and be fab!”

Doechii’s win comes after she took home the award for Best Rap Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. In that speech, Doechii encouraged all Black women to continue being themselves.

Doechii, who identifies as bi-sexual, also had words of wisdom for for LGBTQ youth back in February.
