Austin Butler Says He Was High From Edible Onstage at Bad Bunny Concert

Austin Butler is sharing the story behind his now-viral appearance at Bad Bunny’s concert in Puerto Rico.

Butler, who stars alongside the rapper in the upcoming film Caught Stealing, appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to talk about his recent first trip to Puerto Rico where he watched his co-star perform during his “No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí” residency in San Juan.

Near the three-minute mark in the video linked above, the 33-year-old actor explained that the night before the show, director Darren Aronofsky took him salsa dancing in the rain with locals on a quiet street without tourists after having lunch with Bad Bunny earlier that day.

“The actual show, how they structure it—you have the main stage, and then I thought we were just going to be in an audience, you know, like, with everybody,” Butler explained. “Somebody gave me an edible right before the show, and I thought that was a good idea at the time. So I ate the edible … and then it turns out we’re in, like, a casita, a house, that is basically the second stage … and he’s on that stage at one point.”

After suddenly being onstage with his co-star, Butler said he was torn between wanting to move to the music and wanting to “hide” to avoid drawing attention away from Bad Bunny.

“But then the music’s so good, and it’s like in my bones at that point,” Butler said. “So I’m, like, wanting to dance. But then the other voice inside is saying, ‘Don’t take attention away.’” Butler said.

His solution was swaying his hips with his arms crossed—a moment that later went viral because, as he put it, “For whatever reason, every time I uncrossed my arms, I felt like I was drawing attention to myself.”

“Then I think of, like, the Ben Affleck at the Grammys [meme] where he said he wasn’t having a good time,” he added.

Someone who had the opposite experience inside Bad Bunny’s “casita” was LeBron James, who was dancing on-stage alongside the rapper during the residency’s opening night last month.

Bad Bunny’s residency at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum (or “el Choli,” per the locals) will conclude on September 14.

Austin Butler’s Caught Stealing hits theaters on August 29.
