Watch Shaboozey Perform “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and “Good News” on ‘SNL’

Shaboozey had his SNL debut last night (Dec. 7) and performed one of his iconic hits and one of his newer ones.

First, he took the stage for “Good News” — one of his newer country ballads that speaks to needing a glimmer of light when everything around you is dark. Wearing a pair of stonewashed jeans and a nearly ragged brown blazer, he captured the essence of “worn down” that the song suggests. The gold lighting and mist on the bottom of the stage added another stylistic level to the experience.

Later on during the show, he returned to the stage to perform “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”— his smash hit single that ties “Old Town Road” as the longest-running number-one song of all time on the US Billboard Hot 100 with 19 weeks at the top of the chart. Shaboozey switched up his style for this one, putting on all black and bathing the stage in red lighting. At the end of the performance, he introduced himself to the audience and thanked them for getting tipsy with him.

Shaboozey’s SNL debut came on the same day that actor Paul Mescal had his own. The star of the new Gladiator II film had fun in a sketch that reimagined the movie as a musical inspired by the success of Wicked and Moana 2. Mescal, playing his character Lucius Verus Aurelius, belted out the parody song, “There’s no place like Rome,” to the laughter of the audience.

At the very end of the sketch, Mescal channeled his own Elphaba from Wicked by flying away from the Colosseum on a broomstick while wearing his own witch hat and singing “Defying Gravity” (from Wicked).

Mescal also starred in a couple of other hilarious sketches such as one where he becomes a pirate stripper at a bachelorette party, another where he’s a college student who shocks his parents with a new earring, and an extremely funny one where he’s filming a commercial for an Italian restaurant that repeatedly goes off script.

Chris Rock is set to host SNL next week with Gracie Abrams as the musical guest.
