Donald Glover recently incorporated the music of Stevie Wonder into Atlanta's most memorable season 2 episode: "Teddy Perkins." On Wednesday, he had the rare honor of performing with the legendary songwriter on stage.
Glover, along with Kelly Rowlandand Jessie J, took the stage with Stevie for a rendition of his immortal lead single from 1972's Talking Book, "Superstition," at the Peppermint Club in Los Angeles. The 2 hour performance from Stevie was billed as The Stevie Wonder Song Party: A Celebration of Life, Love and Music. Footage of Glover's appearance at the show has made its way to Twitter, where he can be seen wailing on lead vocals as Stevie plays the keys.
Glover premiered two new songs as his musical alter-ego, Childish Gambino, during his dual host-musical guest gig on last week's episode of Saturday Night Live. He also released a music video for "This Is America," featuring politically-charged imagery that has been discussed at length following its release. ″Our goal is to normalize blackness,” creative director Ibra Ake said of the video. “This is how we would like to dance, but we have to be aware of the danger and the politics of how we’re perceived and the implications of the history of how we were treated.”
Childish Gambino will be heading out on tour this summer. It is speculated that he will be releasing a new album in the near future, though no title or release date has been shared.
