Tyrese Says He’s ‘Officially Retired’ From Social Media, Shares Emotional Message About Masculinity and Divorce

Tyrese Gibson hasn’t been able to stop the tears from flowing during the rollout of his new film 1992 and his seventh album Beautiful Pain.

After emotional appearances on the media circuit, like The Breakfast Club and Club Shay Shay, Gibson announced on Instagram that he has “retired” from social media.

“I’m gonna pray I’m gonna turn my comments off because I don’t want to be reminded of this very nasty and unbearable narrative that REAL MEN don’t cry 🙏,” the caption read, next to a montage of him at the 1992 premiere. Joining him on the red carpet were his Fast & Furious costars Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriquez.

Gibson continued, “REAL MEN these days are constantly being emasculated and someone has said lately even have the nerve to put the word TOXIC in front of MASCULINITY.. yes, the epic failure of trying to make me feel bad about literally being A MAN, an [ALPHA] MALE, protective or OUTspoken FATHER or HEAD of my HOUSEHOLD…”

The 45-year-old wrote that he plans to never “put up another post” about his ex-wife, Samantha Lee, with whom he shares a 6-year-old daughter, Soraya. Gibson also has a 16-year-old daughter, Shayla, from his first marriage.

Gibson also wrote that he’ll no longer try to get “childish and [immature] petty social media trolls” to understand his relationship with his girlfriend Zelie Timothy.

He concluded with a message that men “cry and have feelings TOO!” which he’s frequently shared in interviews over the last month. On The Breakfast Club, Gibson tearfully refused a tissue while crying over significant losses in his life, including the 2022 passing of his mother, Priscilla Murray Gibson.

“I’m doing the best I can with every 24 hours I get,” Gibson said around the 43-minute mark of the video below. “I don’t need no tissue. Black men cry.”

He continued, “There is no square footage I could ever live in, there is no rims, no jewelry, and no car, there is no net worth, there is no press release, there is no co-star there, is no collaboration in the world that could ever replace my mama.”
