Tyrese Gibson Tearfully Reflects on Grief After the Deaths of John Singleton and Paul Walker: ‘Black Men Cry’
Mental health was the conversation topic when R&B singer and actor Tyrese Gibson visited The Breakfast Club recently
Earlier this month, the 45-year-old shocked NFL fans when he performed the National Anthem in a Marvin Gaye tribute look during a Dallas Cowboys vs. Los Angeles Rams game. Around the 18-minute mark of the video below, Gibson clarified that he was intentional about the full costume dedication.
As the interview fluctuated between promotion for his upcoming projects, including the historical drama 1992 and album Beautiful Pain, Gibson reached an emotional point around the 43-minute mark when Charlemagne asked about how he’s processing grief. Charlemagne referenced Gibson losing his late mother and friends Paul Walker and John Singleton, publicized divorces, while the “Lately” artist also mentioned his two deceased sisters.
“Have you really taken the time to deal with all of that grief? Or do you just try to stay busy to avoid it?” Charlemagne asked.
“I’m doing the best I can with every 24 hours I get,” Gibson responded, beginning to cry and declining a tissue. “I don’t need no tissue. Black men cry.”
He continued, “There is no square footage I could ever live in, there is no rims, no jewelry, and no car, there is no net worth, there is no press release, there is no co-star there, is no collaboration in the world that could ever replace my mama.”
“I could never feel the void of what it’s like to wake up and get married and want to be in something for the rest of your life and it goes away,” said Gibson, who’s been married to Norma Gibson and Samantha Lee Gibson. He shares one daughter with each of his ex-wives.
“When divorces happen, women aren’t the only ones that are devastated. When a miscarriage happens, women are not the only ones that you should be checking on. When you can’t put food on the table because your career goes up and then it goes down, stop skipping over the man and just checking on the woman,” Gibson said.
Gibson, who’s now dating Zelie Timothy, has been candid about his 2020 divorce from Samantha Lee for years, even asking her to change her last name.
