Tony Yayo Claims Drake Wearing ‘Free Yayo’ Shirt Lead to Spencer’s Deal
The Drake stimulus package doesn’t just work for rappers on new songs — it also got Tony Yayo an exclusive deal with Spencer’s.
Tony Yayo spoke with DJ Vlad recently about Drake wearing his “Free Yayo” shirt back in July and how that’s benefited him. “Once Drake wore the shirt, I got the call the next day. ‘Spencer’s wants to do a deal with you,’” said Yayo.
Yayo’s “Free Yayo” shirt was originally thrust in the spotlight by Eminem when he wore the same t-shirt during his performance at the 45th Grammy Awards. At the time, Yayo was behind bars for bail jumping following an arrest on New Year’s Eve in 2003.
Drake showed love for Yayo by wearing the same shirt in July and posting it on his Instagram Stories. He most likely wore the shirt in support of Yayo after the latter spoke on DJ Vlad about not believing that Drake’s beef with Kendrick Lamar was finished.
“I think the battle is not over,” Yayo explained in the interview. “Drake is Drake, Kendrick is Kendrick. They’re both two of the biggest artists in the world. … We can say what we wanna say, all Drake gotta do is… Every time we count Drake out he comes back with a fucking hit, that’s all I’m saying. All he gotta do is come back with No. 1 record. The kids are gonna be dancing just like they are to ‘Not Like Us.'”
Earlier this year, Yayo revealed how lucrative a50 Cent’s Final Lap Tour was for his pockets. “I don’t ask for too much,” said Yayo. “I’m making six figures, I don’t ask for much so why would I bother you for more? It’s cool. I’m not worried about that. Trust me, I’m making a great check […] The money is great, the money is excellent.”
Yayo also explained what it was like to tour with Fif. “You gotta understand, a lot of artists don’t get treated [well],” he said. “People think that Fif is a bad guy, but when you’re staying in the Four Seasons, you got the Eiffel Tower there, you staying at the W in Bahrain sipping Ranis on the water.”
He continued, “There’s an F1 race track around the hotel. You just missed Giorgio Armani at breakfast. It’s a fucking movie! Working with 50 is a fucking movie, bro!… I’m tired, we just did six shows back to back. 50’s running on the stages, lifting cranes, switching seven outfits, he goes to the gym twice a day. 50’s not fucking around.”
