The Fam Nova & Whale show us what “Blue Blood Girls” look like [video]

"Blue Blood Girls" is the debut single from emerging Canada-based Russian mother and daughter duo, The Fam Nova & Whale. The record features the duo rapping in English and making references to several Russian terms in order to break stereotypes. They make use of a standard but heavy trap backdrop ripe with dark synths, strings, and thick 808 drums with their nonchalant flow and humor-filled lyrics. From cracking Fabergé eggs on misogynists to repurposing gender slurs like gold diggers et al, the duo brings a refreshing take to this style of alternative hip-hop. They even throw in a classic Russian folklore melody into the refrain for the fun of it.

The self-published artists are hands-on with what they do and in the video, viewers can see just that. Using a plain backdrop, they employ extensive use of performance shots, duo-chrome costumes, and expressive choreography. The visual also has a DIY aesthetic and the models are all unfiltered to present them in their natural beauty as opposed to using artificial skin retouching. While it helps dispel the various stereotypes about Russian women, the visual also captures the duo having fun.

The Fam Nova & Whale are originally from  Ukraine/Russia and are now based in Vancouver, Canada. "Blue Blood Girls"  is the first of many songs from the duo as they are currently working with various local talented professionals in Vancouver.
