SZA Says She’s ‘Just Tired of Not Being a Bug’ While Explaining Why She Wore a Mask on ‘Hot Ones’

SZA made one of the more interesting appearances on Hot Ones when she showed up with a prosthetic bug mask—and explained why she did it.

On Friday’s episode of Hot Ones, hosted by Sean Evans, the 34-year-old artist showed up to take on the gauntlet of spice, clad in a full on bug disguise. Evans asked the TDE signee what the inspired getup meant to her, and she explained her mask creates a space where she can be at peace. The singer also said she’s just “tired of not being a bug.”

“This one brings me so much peace of mind in the realm of like being a person is so daunting,” she explained. “Being in your own skin, the whole Sheboygan like just the freedom of… I’m just tired of being not a bug.”

The bug mask may be more than just a space of peace for SZA and could be the rollout of her new album, LANA. Elsewhere in the Hot Ones episode, she revealed she’s “excited” for her upcoming project, which is the followup to 2022’s SOS.

This isn’t the first time SZA has dressed up like a bug, as she did the same thing in May but with a whole costume designed by FX makeup artists Malina Stearns and Sasha Glasser in a behind-the-scenes photo posted to her social media.

She later teased an unreleased song and video where she played a blue cricket. “I know you told stories about me. most of them awful. All of them true. Here’s some for u,” she captioned the clip.

Rumors began swirling on social media when SZA liked an Instagram post that asked if LANA had a bug theme.

Back in March, SZA said she was starting Lana “from scratch” because songs from the upcoming project were leaked—and she’d end up putting the released music on the deluxe version of SOS. “So we’ll make this really simple. Y’all leaked 3 songs from the deluxe. Atp y’all can keep the throw aways and leaks,” she tweeted, as reported by Variety. “I’ll be starting LANA from scratch do not ask me about it again. Thank you 🫶🏾🙏🏾💗.”
