Surf Gang announces new album “At Least We Tried” and shares “LA Freestyle” featuring RealYungPhil
The Brooklyn-based rap collective Surf Gang headed by producer EvilGiane who arose on the scene with their critically-acclaimed 2021 debut album SGV1, has announced their new album At Least We Tried (Out 10/31) and a new video single “LA Freestyle” (feat. RealYungPhil). The new 8-track album serves as a proper reintroduction for Surf Gang, as the group has evolved from its DIY roots to now solidifying itself as the premiere group of NYC. The new single, “LA Freestyle”, showcases Surf Gang’s dexterity and flair for collaboration, with RealYungPhil, a long-time associate of the group, providing his signature nonchalant braggadocio alongside SG members Polo Perks & Pasto Flocco. The skilled trio trades vibrant verses back and forth, creating an unquenchable energy in the merely 90-second track. The VHS-style video shot in North Hollywood shows Phil, Polo & Pasto parading around a vacant parking lot and a late-night studio session draped in designer, adding to the organic feel of the single. Surf Gang took NYC by storm in 2021 with a stellar debut album, an experimental sound that cut through the noise of NYC’s crowded hip-hop scene, and exhilarating live performances backdropped by a sea of angsty, moshing, teens, and now––they are making their long-awaited return with the release of At Least We Tried on 10/31.
Surf Gang, 2021 debut album SGV1 earned them a notable reputation in the NYC hip-hop scene, with Pitchfork describing, “There hasn’t been such an exciting new act in the city since Brooklyn drill pioneer Pop Smoke”. To couple with the release of the album, Surf Gang put on a performance in New York City, and through a sea of canceled venues, police presence, and overcrowding were eventually conducted in a deserted lot chock full of vacant school buses. Surf Gang migrated their highly-motivated and mobile fanbase to this remote location to simply see the group that has taken over the city perform from the back of a yellow school bus, evidence of the group’s unwavering hold on the ears of the next generation of hip-hop fans. After taking time to develop each individual act in Surf Gang over the past year and redefining the overall vision of the group, they have returned with a refurbished sound and dynamic that will be debuted with the release of At Least We Tried on 10/31.
