Seyi Shay and Yemi Alade team up for “Pempe” [Video]

Nigerian Afropop singer-songwriter Seyi Shay teams up with fellow Nigerian singer Yemi Alade for this hot girl summer bop titled “Pempe.” The Kel P-produced banger is ripe with an infectious groove, lush textures, and anthemic horns which are bolstered by catchy melodies and lyrics that dwell on the female experience.

Shay sets it off on a high note as she confronts a two-timing lover and gives him a taste of his own medicine while Alade explores the drama that comes with getting unwanted attention from people. The duo also takes to task the internet trolls while addressing the way media oversexualize and misrepresent women in general. As catchy tunes go, this one hits the mark. It’s not over-produced and both ladies deliver solid performances while embodying their Nigerian roots. The title is a Nigerian street slang meaning hot lady while most of the lyrics are also in Nigerian Pidgin English. The visual by veteran director Clarence Peters is a raw display of girl power from start to finish. Peters makes use of dark moody lighting to emphasize the ladies’ femininity in many ways. The special effects aren’t much as much focus is on the cinematic aesthetics and set pieces that tap into the theme of the song.

“Pempe” is taken from Seyi Shay’s forthcoming EP dubbed Big Girl. The EP is her 3rd body of work while her previous endeavors include supporting Beyonce during her “I AM” tour in the UK and she also wrote and produced three songs for the soundtrack to Konami’s video game Crime Life: Gang Wars amongst other collaborations.
