Saweetie Says “My Type” Was Originally a Diss Track Before Becoming ‘Global Phenom’
Saweetie has revealed that her 2019 hit song “My Type” went through multiple iterations before fans heard the final version.
Sitting down with Bootleg Kev for a new interview, the Bay Area rapper talked about how her “biggest song” was originally a diss record.
“I love ‘My Type,'” she said in the video below. “‘My Type,’ I was lit in the studio — it was coming from an emotional place. When I wrote ‘My Type,’ at first, it was a diss record.”
She also changed the lyrics, explaining that the chorus originally said: “New whips, new dick, ride around dipped,” rather than the current version, in which she raps: “New wrist, new whip, ride around dipped.”
“It was coming from an energy that was organic,” she explained. “It did start out as a diss but I changed it and it became a global phenom. That song charted with no marketing, no budget.”
When the host asked if it was for “an ex,” she was vague, explaining that it was addressed “to a person.”
“My Type” features on Saweetie’s 2019 EP, So Icy. The track became her first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100, debuting at No. 81 and later, peaking at No. 21.
Last week, Saweetie found herself on the receiving end of some hate regarding her career — but she made it clear she isn’t bothered by the mean things the internet has to say.
“Saweetie’s music career is like an iPhone with 1% battery,” beauty influencer Shawn Graham wrote on X on Friday (August 15). “Everyone can see it’s about to die, but she’s still acting like it’s fully charged. She’s blaming her label for not putting a dollar behind her, but let’s be real… even if they did, that dollar would’ve been better spent at Dollar Tree buying a broom to sweep up all the flop singles she’s been dropping.”
Responding at first with a simple “so,” Saweetie went on to turn the insult around on Graham, adding: “just because y’all give up easily on ur dreams (then have to live vicariously through someone else’s ☹️) doesn’t mean I am 😭😭😭 thank you for the compliment tho, still that bitch on 1%.”
The pair went back and forth a couple more times, before Saweetie’s fans stepped in to defend the rapper against the insults.
Saweetie is currently gearing up for the release of her debut studio album, Pretty Bitch Music, which is slated to release later this year.
