Rich The Kid Reveals How Kendrick Lamar Got on ‘New Freezer’
Rich The Kid has revealed how Kendrick Lamar gave him one of the best features of his career on his 2018 hit “No Freezer.”
On the latest episode of Drink Champs, Rich discussed how he landed a K Dot feature on “No Freezer” by simply being in the right place at the right time. Rich had just moved to Los Angeles and was trying to find his footing in the music business. Interscope Records A&R Manny Smith helped him get situated, and the rapper went right into the studio to hopefully take his career to the next level.
According to Rich, he had recorded the song in New York and it originally featured ASAP Ferg and MadeinTYO, but Smith, who was working with Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith on a project at the time, wanted him to meet Kendrick since he was recording right next door. Rich was more than happy to have Kendrick join the studio session, and he played him two songs, the last of which was “No Freezer,” and caught the Compton native’s attention.
“So I’m playing ‘New Freezer’ for him, he like ‘This the one.’ I was like ‘Dope,’ but at the time, it was a verse from A$AP Ferg on ‘New Freezer,'” Rich explained. “I played it for Kendrick and he like ‘Alright cool, I’ll get on it but it just got to be me and you on the song.'”
Rich was reluctant to take Ferg off the track, but the Harlem native reassured him that collaborating with Kendrick would be the right move. The track was made and the rest was history as the single went double platinum while catapulting Rich’s career.
