Miley Cyrus Says Mom’s IG Unfollow Happened Because ‘She Doesn’t Know How to Work Her Phone’
Miley Cyrus is saying it was all an accident.
The singer responded on Saturday (May 10) to reports from earlier in the week that various family tensions had culminated in her mother, Tish Cyrus-Purcell, unfollowing her on Instagram.
The “Wrecking Ball” artist posted an Instagram story intended to put any speculation to rest by acknowledging that the unfollow was real, but saying that it was accidental.
“I rarely comment on rumors, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us,” the “Flowers” singer wrote. “Like a lot of moms, she doesn’t know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me — simple, coincidental, and uninteresting.”
Cyrus-Purcell had a similar story, writing in an Instagram comment on Wednesday (May 7) that she had “no idea” how the unfollow happened.
Many fans had assumed that Cyrus-Purcell’s unfollow was tied to Miley’s visit to see her father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus, around that same time.
The three-time Grammy winner’s parents divorced in 2022. Both have moved on romantically: Billy divorced vocalist Firerose in 2024 after one year of marriage and currently dates actress Elizabeth Hurley. Tish married actor Dominic Purcell in 2023, although he previously dated his now-wife’s youngest daughter, Noah.
Miley nodded in her IG story to “challenges” in her relationship with her father — a nod to reports that their relationship became strained around the time of his divorce from Cyrus-Purcell. But she said that things were now much better.
“Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else,” she wrote. “I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing.”
Miley signed off with gratitude that her family continues to have “good health and love.”
