MF DOOM’s Widow and Eothen ‘Egon’ Alapatt Resolve Dispute Over Late Rapper’s Notebooks

MF DOOM‘s widow, Jasmine Thompson, and his Stones Throw colleague, Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, have settled their differences over the late rapper’s notebooks.

On Friday, a post was shared from DOOM’s Instagram page that announced Thompson and Alapatt have resolved the dispute over the notebooks in a “confidential settlement.” Alapatt stated that DOOM was a dear friend of his and that he purchased the notebooks to ensure he could preserve the rapper’s legacy. He also added that he trusts Thompson to figure out the next steps with the rapper’s notebooks.

Thompson had shared a statement of her own where she expressed relief in the matter being resolved while also denouncing all the “public narratives” that misrepresented the entire situation. She further explained how DOOM’s family acknowledged that Alapatt preserved the notebooks and was grateful that he returned them.

“As a family, our focus remains steadfast on celebrating DOOM’s extraordinary legacy—his unparalleled artistry and his lasting impact on music and culture,” Thompson said in her statement. “We hope that this resolution serves as a step forward in continuing to honor his memory.”

Thompson filed a lawsuit against Alapatt in 2023, claiming that the latter stole 31 of DOOM’s notebooks, which contained many of the rapper’s songs, unreleased material, ideas, and tracks from several of DOOM’s albums, including Operation Doomsday (1999), Madvillainy (2004), and MM…FOOD (2004).

The lawsuit stated Alapatt was in possession of the notebooks and allegedly demanded they be “donated to a university or government archive” or a “museum or other institution of [Alapatt’s] choosing.” DOOM’s family argued that the rapper wouldn’t have wanted that, instead wanting to keep the material a secret.
