Machine Gun Kelly Opens Up About His Father’s Murder Trial
Machine Gun Kelly got candid about his tumultuous childhood and the life-altering event his father experienced at a tender age.
The rapper and singer, born Colson Baker, sat down with Bunnie XO for a new episode of the Dumb Blonde podcast published on August 5 where he discussed some of the trauma his late father experienced at a young age and how it affected his upbringing.
“I always used to get so mad at him when I was a kid because if I scared him or he heard a loud boom or a loud noise, he would freak out, like, gnarly freak out,” said MGK, 34, at the 16:12 mark in the link above.
“And I would be like, ‘You’re supposed to be a man, dude. Why are you acting like this?’ It just made me hate him. And then you sit there and you think about a kid who was on trial at nine years old for the murder of his father.”
He explained that his grandfather dropped a gun and his head “essentially blew off” with MGK’s grandmother and father present in the room. The police discovered the shotgun underneath the bed. Both his grandmother and father were tried but eventually acquitted.
“He had split personality and, you know, schizophrenia runs really heavy in that side of the family. So a lot of things I’ve taken on, and I think I’ve projected myself to be somebody who has the stamina to endure all of these things that come with fame and criticism and hate,” MGK said. “Because I fought back with all those traumas by becoming what I always wanted my dad to be, which was tough and shake everything off and just fight anyone who comes at you.”
“I never understood why he was so closed. But dude, I’m tired and I’m a really shy, fucked up kid internally and really broken,” he added.
According to People, MGK announced on X that his father passed away on July 5, 2020 on the first anniversary of his fourth studio album, Hotel Diablo. However, the “Bloody Valentine” singer hopes to break the cycle and leave the generational trauma behind him.
“Every medium that I’ve spoke to says there’s a generational curse on all the men in my family, that they will die alone, and they’ve all died alone. I’m the seventh generation, which means that I should be able to break the curse,” he told Bunnie XO.
“I was born on the 22nd, which is a master number. And the numerology behind mine is a curse breaker. So I do hope in this lifetime that I master my best self and what I’m supposed to do. It’s a very difficult road that I’m on right now with that.”
