M.I.A. Says Jay-Z Told Her to Get Plastic Surgery When She Signed to Roc Nation: ‘I’m Not Insecure’

M.I.A. says Jay-Z told her to surgically enhance her features as soon as she signed to his label Roc Nation in 2012.

The British rapper and producer joined the Roc Nation management roster one year before the release of her fourth album Matangi, and she left in 2014. But while speaking on Instagram Live on Friday, M.I.A. claimed that the “first thing” that Hov told her to do upon their meeting was “get plastic surgery.”

“I’m not insecure because I would have got plastic surgery,” she continued. “So their argument of ‘Maya’s fucking insecure, that’s why she needs to fucking massage her ego,’ fails. It fails because you turn around and ask … What women do you know who hasn’t had plastic surgery around you? All of them have. I’m the only one who didn’t, which already proves the fact it’s not insecurity.”

She continued, “Because it’s OK. Guess what? I’m 50, and I’m totally fine with the fact I am because, yeah, I fucking took off when I was 30 … It took 10 more fucking years than any other fucker because I was the first and I was the new. I was making something interesting happen that wasn’t fucking happening before.”

It wouldn’t be the first time the “Born Free” artist aired out her grievances against Roc Nation. In February, during a social media rant about her career, 15-year-old son Ikhyd, and politics, M.I.A. claimed that Mathangi was “buried” due to Jay-Z’s relationship with the Bronfmans. M.I.A. shares Ikhyd with Benjamin Bronfman.

“I sacrificed my career for my child,” she wrote on X at the time. “They ripped me off and copied my style and gave it to their puppets and shadowbanned me on every platform. But it was worth it to save him from the madness of what you know now.”

She also claimed that Roc Nation “stopped all communication with me and all my emails to jayz asking for help was wiped from my inbox.”
