Lizzo Says Relationship with Her Boyfriend Progressed Like a ‘Friends-to-Lovers Trope’
Lizzo and her boyfriend, Myke Wright, confirmed their romance in 2022, but the pair had known each other for years before that.
On a new episode of Therapuss with Jake Shane, the Grammy winner gave a bit more insight into the couple’s relationship history, describing it as embodying the “friends-to-lovers trope.”
Lizzo and Wright have known each other for almost 10 years, first meeting as co-hosts of the MTV show Wonderland in 2016.
“I was the music girl, he was the comedy guy,” she said. “I was just like, ‘He’s my best friend.’ I didn’t have any guy friends like that—well, I did, because you know I’m in the music industry. But I was like ‘Wow, I can really talk to him.’”
“We had this crazy bond for years,” she continued. “I do love that we were friends first, so that means we can talk about anything.”
When the host described Wright as her “best friend,” Lizzo agreed.
“Literally,” she said. “That is low-key like a fantasy. Right? It’s like a ‘BookTok’ dream to be like, ‘Oh my God, like he was my best friend.’”
They went on to publicize their relationship in April 2022 after Andy Cohen accidentally outed them on his radio show.
Months after, on the Howard Stern Show, Lizzo explained that when she met Wright, she had “wild defenses” that “made it almost impossible for a true, intimate relationship to occur.”
When asked on Therapuss if she would marry Wright in the future, Lizzo responded, “There’s nobody else I’m going to be with for the rest of my life.”
