Lil Wayne Says He Told Kendrick Lamar to ‘Kill It’ at the Super Bowl
Lil Wayne reveals he spoke with Kendrick Lamar and gave him some words of encouragement for his upcoming Super Bowl halftime show.
In a new interview with Skip Bayless, the 42-year-old rapper reflected on not being chosen to perform at the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show in his hometown of New Orleans, where Kendrick Lamar will perform instead.
Around the 45-second mark in the video linked above, Wayne explained that the situation is beyond his control but that he views the decision as motivation to improve to a point where being selected to perform becomes undeniable.
“I wanna get to the point where I’m undeniable,” Wayne explained. “I want them to walk in there and have 10 other choices and whoever’s in charge says ‘No, you have to go with him.’”
Bayless took the opportunity to bring up lyrics from K.Dot’s “wacced out murals,” the opening track to his new album, GNX, which Wayne says he hadn’t heard before.
On the track, Kendrick raps, “I used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud/Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.”
“That was my first time hearing it,” Wayne told Bayless. “I think he’s a fan, like I’m a fan of his music … He saw with everybody else. He saw how much it meant to me, I think that’s all he means.”
He added, “Obviously he can’t control that, you know? So he didn’t let me down. It ain’t like he can control it or nothing. And also I’ve spoken to him and I wished him all the best and told him he better kill it.”
It’s not clear if Wayne and Lamar spoke before or after “wacced out murals” was released. However, a day after the track was released, Wayne shared a cryptic message to his X account which many perceived to be a response to Kendrick.
“Man wtf I do?! I just be chillin & dey still kome 4 my head. Let’s not take kindness for weakness. Let this giant sleep. I beg u all. No one really wants destruction, not even me but I shall destroy if disturbed. On me. Love,” Wayne wrote on X.
Bayless also didn’t mention what else Kendrick said further into the track, which included, “Got the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me, all these n***as agitated / I’m just glad it’s on their faces.”
Weezy also shot down any speculation that he could make a special surprise appearance during Kendrick’s halftime performance, saying, “I’m not gonna even be in the country.”
Super Bowl LIX will take place February 9, 2025, at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
In other Kendrick Lamar news, 50 Cent recently came to the defense of the Compton rapper, who was the target of a sexual assault joke from comedian Andrew Schulz. Fif, while acknowledging he’s a fan of Schulz, said he doesn’t understand why the comedian claimed he would “make love” to K Dot.
