Kaytranada Reveals Missed Chance to Work on Drake’s ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ Due to Casual Response

Kaytranada had the chance to produce Drake’s Honestly, Nevermind album — but the opportunity went away because he didn’t seem too excited.

In a new interview with Vulture, the 32-year-old revealed how he nearly had the chance to produce Drizzy’s seventh studio album that dropped in 2022.

According to Kaytranada, he was approached at a Coachella after-party in Los Angeles to make beats for the album. However, the chance passed by — with him hearing that his response of “Sure, hit me up” lacked enthusiasm. “Was I supposed to be like, ‘Oh my God, for real? Drake?’ I’m not like that,” the producer said.

Though Kaytranada didn’t end up making beats for Honestly, Nevermind, the artist’s influence can be felt across the project that’s dedicated to late fashion designer Virgil Abloh. The album’s overall sound leans more into the dance and house space — similar to Kaytranada’s music. Drizzy also opted to work with his frequent collaborator 40, Gordo, and Black Coffee instead.

Elsewhere in Kaytranada’s interview, he spoke about what happened to the remix of Beyoncé’s “Cuff It” that never hit streaming services. He reveals that the legendary artist offered to pay him for the remix so she could retain all of the rights to the song — but he politely declined.

“Sometimes people don’t see your worth and how important you are,” he said. I know what I mean to people.”

Back in June, Kaytranada shared the album Timeless — his third LP that arrived five years after his acclaimed sophomore project Bubba.

Timeless features appearances from Childish Gambino, Tinashe, Rochelle Jordan, Lou Phelps, Durand Bernarr, Don Toliver, Charlotte Day Wilson, Ravyn Lenae, Dawn Richard, Anderson .Paak, SiR, Thundercat, PinkPantheress, and Mariah the Scientist.
