Joji Is Bored With the Galaxy in ’80s-inspired ‘Sanctuary’ Music Watch

Following last year’s Ballads I, Joji is back Friday (June 14) with the soulful new retro-feeling track “Sanctuary.”

It's a love song that slinks along with ambient synths and a minimalistic beat as the 26-year-old emotively croons about being a “Sanctuary” for a lover. Described as a “taste before the madness” in a press release, Joji’s latest recalls the futuristic style of the ‘80s and was released with a music video that similarly recalls the era.

Directed by Eoin Glaister, the video for “Sanctuary” brings the singer/songwriter to outer space, where he plays the role of a hero who has saved the day but suffers from malaise without a purpose in the aftermath. Featuring a galactic crew he’s traveling with and a variety of alien species they encounter, Joji’s latest is as entertaining as it is reflective.

Last year, the alt R&B trip-hop artist landed his first single, "Slow Dancing in the Dark," from Ballads I on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while the album itself peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200.
