Reyez named the producer after two women accused him of sexual assault.
Jessie Reyez's chilling single "Gatekeeper" chronicled the sexism and misogyny she experienced in the music industry, and on Thursday (May 10), Reyez revealed the identity of the song's inspiration: music producer Noel "Detail" Fisher, who was recently accused of sexually assaulting two singers.
Reyez retweeted a TMZ report about two female artists who recently accused the producer of rape. "One night, over 6 years ago Noel ‘Detail’ Fisher tried this on me. I was lucky and I got out before it got to this," she wrote on Twitter. "I didn’t know what to say or who to tell. I was scared. Fear is a real thing. The girls that came out are brave as hell."
In a post on Instagram, she confirmed Fisher was, indeed, the inspiration behind her 2017 track, writing, "Yes this is who gatekeeper is about. My experience didn’t get this awful. I hope these women find justice."
On "Gatekeeper," Reyez recalled being told to sleep with the "gatekeepers" in order to advance in her career. Speaking to Billboard last year, Reyez said that while she made it out unscathed, she almost considered the offer.
"I thought about it. I say in the video I thought about doing it. It’s not like I was adamant about the ‘No’ off the bat," she said. "I thought about it because I was thinking that this might be my only shot and this might be what it is, so if I say no now, the probability of me encountering this again within another year, another two years, the way he’s talking about it, it sounds like it’s probable so why am I going to say no?"
After sharing her story on "Gatekeeper," she felt the response and how much the song resonated with so many other people. "The fact that It resonated with people has two sides: it’s dope that people resonate with it, but it’s shitty that so many people resonated with it at the same time, you know?" she added. "But I think about how you said social media and the fact that the feminist movement is getting stronger by the day and it’s nice to see more of that ideal, sisterhood and unity."
