Fugees Rapper Pras’ Sentencing in Conspiracy Case Delayed for Emergency Colon Cancer Surgery
Fugees rapper Prakazrel “Pras” Michel was scheduled to be sentenced last month, but it was delayed last minute so that he can receive emergency colon cancer surgery.
A representative for Pras’ legal team, Erica Dumas, told Complex, “Pras was unable to attend his scheduled sentencing hearing on Friday due to emergency medical surgery to remove cancer from his colon. We wish him a complete and speedy recovery as he navigates both his legal matters and his health journey.” It was not previously disclosed that Pras was diagnosed with colon cancer.
The new sentencing date has been tentatively set for October 3, just days before his 53rd birthday.
In 2023, Pras was found guilty of all ten counts he was facing in his federal conspiracy case. The rapper, real name Prakazrel Michel, was found guilty of being involved with an international conspiracy scheme involving millions of dollars in foreign money. He is facing as much as 20 years in prison and has been free on bond pending appeals ever since.
In 2019, Pras was indicted for allegedly aiding in the illegal transfer of $865,000 into Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign. In 2021, he was then charged with running a back- channel campaign to get the Trump administration to drop the investigation into Malaysian financier Jho Low.
Earlier this year, per The Hollywood Reporter, President Donald Trump was allegedly considering a pardon for Pras. While the White House would not confirm or deny the reports, his legal team said they were “exploring all available options following his case.” In his appeal, he argued that his defense attorney who represented him during the case was incompetent because he used artificial intelligence to craft his closing statements.
