Fetty Wap’s Sister Calls for Rapper’s Sentence to Be Shortened: ‘Justice Should Also Mean Mercy’
Fetty Wap’s sister hopes her brother can get a second chance.
In a recent post shared to Fetty’s Instagram account, his sister, Divinity Maxwell-Butts, pleaded for the rapper’s prison sentence to be commuted so he can come home to his family.
“April is Second Chance Month—a time to recognize that people deserve redemption, not just punishment,” Maxwell-Butts wrote on Instagram.
She continued, “My brother has taken responsibility and served over half his sentence for a nonviolent offense. He is scheduled to be released in 2027, but justice should also mean mercy. His sentence should be commuted so he can come home to his family, his children, and his purpose. It’s time.”
The 33-year-old from Paterson, New Jersey, is currently imprisoned after pleading guilty in 2022 to federal drug charge, including conspiracy to possess and distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.
“Nobody made me do it. Nobody forced me to do it,” Fetty Wap told XXL in a November 2023 interview. “When I put myself in that situation, I ain’t really think for the long run. I’m thinking I could just run up a few million dollars, and I’m gon’ be good forever.”
He continued, “When I wanted to start doing shit, this is what I know how to do. It was like, ‘I’m being honest with myself.’ Like, ‘A’ight, the music wasn’t really doin’ that good’ … Instead of pursuing my career harder or going harder to make people listen, I was a coward… and I was just like, ‘I can’t let my family down.’”
Fetty’s single “Again” hit the No. 1 spot on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, thanks to a viral trend mimicking old JBL speakers, according to Billboard.
“Again” also re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 41 thanks to its 12.2 million U.S. streams. The song’s resurgence helped return Fetty’s 2015 self-titled album to the Billboard 200 chart at No. 33, its best position since 2016.
