Exclusive Interview With Neo-Soul Singer-Songwriter StevenCharles

Rising star StevenCharles just dropped the music video for “Stay”, his new vibrant single that carries out the artist’s authenticity and talent. This charismatic song has immense positivity distilled in its neo-soul soundscapes, making Steven Charles sound stunning. We had the opportunity to chat with him about the concept of the music video, his love for dancing, artistic influences and more!

Congratulations on the release of the music video for your debut single “Stay”!

Who came-up with the concept of the music video and what does it represent for you?

My lifelong best friend came up with the concept. She understood the vibe of the song, and I fell in love with her vision. This video represents the good vibes I try to pursue with my everyday life. I wanted to portray positive energy and camaraderie with the tribe of dancers and intertwine that with a charming love story that viewers would remember.

Do you have a special connection with dancing? Are you a skilled dancer yourself?

Yes to both. From crews in Montreal to workshops in New York, dance has always been a part of my life and it’s always been my dream to include choreography with my performances.

Did you face any difficulty shooting the music video with all the restrictions going on these days?

Surprisingly, it wasn’t all that difficult. Most of the shooting took place outdoors. The one indoor location mandated masks and talent only removed masks while rolling. The crew was very understanding and easy to work with.

Are there any behind-the scenes moments that you could share with our audience?

It was really amazing to see how much hard work these dancers put into their choreography. The day at the fair was filled with good times, it didn’t even feel like we were shooting. There’s a lot of BTS videos on my brother’s TikTok (@kcharles808) and I’ll be posting some soon to my Instagram/TikTok (stevencharles13) so follow and stay tuned!

What is your most memorable moment as an artist?

The creative process, writing and recording the song. My time in the booth is where I can express myself the most. The connection between my voice and the lyrics comes naturally and it’s where I thrive most. The experience of writing a song is spiritual. I usually never forget a song’s inception.

Are there any near future releases on the horizon?

Absolutely! We’re just getting started. The next one “Love You Still” is a Soul ballad that I can’t wait to share. Coming Soon!

What is your favorite song at the moment?

Sooo much good music came out this year! My workout playlist is stacked but my latest favorite is The Weeknd and Post Malone’s “One Right Now”. They’re both kings of hooks and melody.  Such a dope vibe and the lyrics are all about moving on from a toxic relationship. It’s autonomous and empowering.

What artists have influenced you the most?

Alicia Keys & John Legend are the musicians that made me feel like I need to do this too. True musicians with so much class and finesse. John has all the soul and character to his voice that I grew up trying to emulate, and Alicia’s lyrics are so important and well crafted I dream of writing songs as monumental as hers.

What’s next for StevenCharles?

I just wanna keep making music and sharing it with the world as cliché as that might sound.

Stadiums, Radio, Festivals… all of it.

Thank You!
