Dionne Warwick Is Not a Fan of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us”: ‘I Don’t Think That This Should Be a Public Thing’
It’s safe to say that Dionne Warwick is NOT a fan of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”
The legendary singer sat down with NPR for its series “Nobody Asked for This” in which she rated different songs that she was presumably hearing for the first time. When a snippet of “Not Like Us” played, Warwick’s smile turned into a frown while listening to K. Dot pulverizing Drake’s character on wax.
When asked about the look on her face, Warwick didn’t hold back. “This is the look of why,” she explained. “I don’t think that this should be a public thing.”
Warwick continued on, giving her thoughts on the track. “So as far as I’m concerned, I’m not going to rate this one,” she decided. It’s worth noting that she rated Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck Babe” four and a half Dionnes and Charli XCX’s “Guess” four Dionnes prior to hearing Lamar.
After dissing 2024’s biggest diss track, Warwick continued handing out good ratings. For Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please,” she gave it four and a half Dionnes. She also said she couldn’t relate to Carpenter’s “Espresso” lyric: “I’m working late because I’m a singer.”
It’s okay that Warwick isn’t a “Not Like Us” stan — because the world is. Aside from it spending multiple months in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, it was practically the song of the summer. The success of the track, at Drake’s expense, undoubtedly played a part in Lamar being set to perform at the Super Bowl in 2025 in the Halftime show.
In an announcement video earlier this month, Lamar set the internet ablaze with the phrase, “Only one opportunity to win a championship. No round twos.” Many thought it to be a reference to a Drake post (from his burner account) in which he shared an image of basketball player Rasheed Wallace saying, “We will win Game 2.”
It’s safe to say Warwick would definitely not be a fan of whatever diss track would come out if that were to happen.
