ASAP Rocky Assault Trial: Police Officer Testifies as First Witness

ASAP Rocky‘s gun trial is underway, and the first witness, Erika Jayne’s son and LAPD officer Thomas Zizzo, has been called to the stand.

On Friday, Zizzo took the stand for Rocky’s trial and explained he was one of the police officers who responded to the alleged shooting in Los Angeles in 2021, TMZ reports. Zizzo described what he saw once he arrived on the scene, and footage from his bodycam was shown in the courtroom.

Zizzo also explained that he was in a parking lot near the scene to speak with residents who reported the shooting. Jayne had Zizzo with her first husband, Thomas Zizzo, and, as she explained during an interview in 2020, kept her son out of the public eye. Zizzo graduated from the LAPD Academy in 2016.

Meanwhile, TMZ caught up with Rocky on Friday as he was leaving the courthouse and asked what he’d like to say to his supporters. He remained tight-lipped but managed to say a quick “I love you.”

Rocky’s trial had an unusual moment earlier this week when Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mark S. Arnold called the 36-year-old rapper’s mother “beautiful.” Judge Arnold appeared startled to see how young Rocky’s mother is when she came to support him in his trial.

Prosecutors are accusing Rocky of firing multiple shots at his former friend ASAP Relli in Hollywood during an argument over an alleged unpaid funeral expense. Rocky pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. If convicted, the rapper faces up to 24 years in prison.

On the first day of the trial, Rocky rejected a plea deal that would’ve had him plead guilty to one assault charge and serve 180 days in county jail with three years probation and a seven-year suspended prison sentence.

ASAP Rocky’s assault trial, which kicked off on Friday, Jan. 24, in Los Angeles, saw both the prosecution and defense delivering their opening statements. You can watch footage taken during the trial below.
