Drake Speaks Out About Friends Switching Up on Him: ‘They Might Stab You in the Back…That’s How Life Is’

Drake had some wise words about being portrayed by friends while on stage at Tyrone “T-rex” Edwards’ Nostalgia Party in Toronto.

Before performing a song, Drake launched into a speech about his friends and hinted that some of them have switched up on him. “My real friends are definitely in the building,” he said. “But let me tell you that you’re going to come to a point in life where people you thought were friends, or people you thought were close to you switch up.”

As to what they’ll do to you when they switch up, Drake made that very clear. “They might stab you in the back,” he claimed. “They might do a lot of things to you.”

“You’ll come to that realization wherever you’re at in life, you’ll probably be there or been there — that’s how life is,” he added. “Sometimes it’s you and you alone, by yourself. Sometimes, it’s you alone with your thoughts.”

Drake’s realization comes after he’s spent the better of 2024 locked in a serious rap beef with Kendrick Lamar. Let’s be real — K. Dot won. By stepping into the role of the loser, Drizzy’s had time to think about the people that he’s probably thought about as his friends switching up and seemingly supporting K. Dot while Drizzy was left to fend for himself.

Last week, Drake unfollowed both LeBron James and DeMar DeRozan — two NBA superstars who could be considered his friends. After LeBron was caught singing “Like That” during warmups and both he and DeRozen attended Lamar’s “The Pop Out” event in Compton (DeRozan also appeared in the video for “Not Like Us”, it’s safe to say assume that these are examples of people “switching up” on him.

Another person that seemingly switched sides on Drake was YG, who Drake even name-dropped on the Lamar diss “Family Matters.” That shoutout led to YG aligning himself with Lamar — even going so far as to seemingly diss Drake with “When it’s smoke, don’t ever mention my name” on the song “Weird.”

For the most part though, Drake’s took everything that’s happened with grace and kept pushing. Late last month, his October’s Very Own brand released its new Hometown Heroes collection that honors three legendary athletes from Toronto.
