Sabrina Carpenter Details Backlash for Embracing Sexuality: ‘I Definitely Get That As Well’
Sabrina Carpenter has made it clear that she gets backlash for incorporating sexuality into her artistry — just like the pop stars that came before her.
Carpenter spoke with TIME for a new cover story in which she addressed the vilification that both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera experienced for the level of sexuality that appears in their work. “No, I definitely get that as well,” explained Carpenter.
Carpenter took things further, explaining that pop stars before her have helped to make progress so sexuality in artistry is more acceptable, but the 25-year-old singer revealed that there are still outspoken people who have problems with what she chooses to wear.
“But you’ll still get the occasional mother that has a strong opinion on how you should be dressing,” said Carpenter. “And to that I just say, don’t come to the show and that’s OK.”
Carpenter continued on, explaining how important what she’s wearing is to her ability to perform. “It’s unfortunate that it’s ever been something to criticize because truthfully, the scariest thing in the world is getting up on a stage in front of that many people and having to perform as if it’s nothing,” she admitted. “If the one thing that helps you do that is the way you feel comfortable dressing, then that’s what you’ve got to do.”
Elsewhere in her cover story, Carpenter opened up about how it feels to always be critiqued on social media. “Someone told me this, whenever I would get upset or feel like I’m the only one getting criticized for something other people are able to do seemingly so freely: I’m the one that’s seeing all the negative shit about myself,” she said. “My friends don’t see that.”
Last month, Carpenter referenced the speculation surrounding her apparent role in the indictment of New York City major Eric Adams, thanks to her “Feather” music video. “Damn, what now?” she said during her show at Madison Square Garden. “Should we talk about how I got the mayor indicted, or…?”
