50 Cent Says Tapping Into His ‘Stupid Side’ Is the Only Way He Can Write New Music
50 Cent revealed the lengths, or lack thereof, he would need to go to write songs that would be up to par with today’s standard of hip-hop music.
“If you listen to the music that’s out right now, I have to tap into my stupid,” 50 said at the 1:40 mark in a September interview with Earn Your Leisure. “I have to tap into the stupid side of me to write the right thing when it comes time to write the music.”
50 Cent explained he redirected his focus from music to film and television production because the 49-year-old mogul believed he could “impact things in a bigger way.”
“This is why I haven’t created as much content as I was creating in the past and I started going towards the film production and development of these projects,” he said. “Because I can impact things in a bigger way through that.”
His last studio album, Animal Ambition, released a decade ago.
50 has certainly been keeping busy as a producer and continues to do so with Netflix’s acquisition of the docuseries centered around the allegations made against Sean “Diddy” Combs.
“This is a story with significant human impact. It is a complex narrative spanning decades, not just the headlines or clips seen so far,” the Queens native said in a joint statement with director and co-executive producer Alexandria Stapleton.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to give a voice to the voiceless and to present authentic and nuanced perspectives,” the statement continued. “While the allegations are disturbing, we urge all to remember that Sean Combs’ story is not the full story of hip-hop and its culture. We aim to ensure that individual actions do not overshadow the culture’s broader contributions.”
50 further elaborated on his thoughts about his place in the young person’s game of hip-hop in a 2022 appearance on 97.9 The Box.
“Part of hip-hop is youth culture. I don’t think you’re supposed to have the hottest verse at 50 years old in hip-hop,” he explained. “I think the 16-year-old kid, the 15-year-old — that guy should be thinking and doing what is keeping the culture thriving, so it grows to a new energy with new vibes, with new music.”
