Zion Williamson Walks Out of Media Day Interview After Being Asked Why Kendrick Lamar Wasn’t on His Summer Playlist
Heading into the New Orleans Pelicans‘ Media Day on Monday, Zion Williamson had to expect that he would face questions about his weight loss, but it was an investigation into his own taste in music that he could not have seen coming.
Towards the end of his press conference, Williamson was asked why Kendrick Lamar was not in his offseason workout playlist, which left the Pelicans star wondering why he would be asked that question in the first place. The Kendrick question begins at the 12:16 mark in the clip up top.
“I just feel like you have two good songs you could’ve been playing in the gym,” the reporter responded, to which Zion fired back, “What songs would those be?”
“Euphoria” and “Not Like Us” were the songs being referenced.
“Where was the greatness of the summer in your tracklist?,” the intrepid reporter asked.
“I hear you. But you know, you’re entitled to your opinion,” Zion said. “I’m entitled to mine, but saying that…c’mon, it’s Kendrick Lamar. Like, I really gotta sit up here and talk about how good of an artist he is?”
Before the two could engage any further on the topic, Williams decided to walk off the stage.
The topic of Zion’s offseason workout routine was first brought up at the 8:25 mark when he was asked to provide an album or songs that would be in the soundtrack of his summer.
After giving it some serious thought, Williamson mentioned Ready to Die by Notorious B.I.G. and Nas‘ Illmatic, as well as Larry June. The 24-year-old also spoke about New Orleans native Currensy, who was in heavy rotation throughout his workout
“I feel like early, especially when I started training seriously, I feel like Currensy was heavy in the mix,” Williamson added.
Zion Williamson wasn’t the only player in an awkward situation during the NBA’s Media Day on Monday. Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard was asked by a reporter about GloRilla shooting her shot with him during his interview. “I keep my personal life personal, you know?” Lillard replied when asked if he’d given the situation with Glo any thought. “And I let it be that. I respect her as an artist. We know each other, she’s an artist, I’m an artist. But as far as anything else, it ain’t nothing going on. That’s what I can tell you.”
