Schoolboy Q Tells Ben Baller He Considered Robbing His Store Years Ago: ‘I’m So Happy We Didn’t’

In an appearance on J.R. Smith and Stephen Malbon’s Par 3 podcast from an interview that took place in 2023, Schoolboy Q admitted to Ben Baller that he and some friends considered robbing his Slauson Avenue store when they were young.

During the conversation, at around the 28:30 point as seen above, Baller reflected on when his store was in Slauson, near where Q grew up. “The funny is, and it’s funny to say it, me and my homeboy ‘Lil One Punch from the set and T-Rell… Bro, you know we thought about robbing your store?” said Q, to which Baller laughed. “I’m so happy we didn’t do it, we woulda died. You know, we were young and shit.”

He added that it was especially foolish of them to consider robbing the store because it always had security. “There’s mad security and all that shit, we thought we were just going to run in that motherfucker like.. ‘We gon’ get him!'” he said. “Look, this is a real story. The homie Punch or whatever, we trying to map this out. We done go to the thing, we done planned it out. One of the homies going to have a fight over here, act like we fighting to get the security lured away.”

Q and his friends realized, ultimately, that it wasn’t a good idea. “I think one day, like a week or something before we was about to do it… We was like, ‘Bro we gon’ die,'” he continued. “But we was poor as a motherfucker.” Baller shared that he had an incident at the store before when an attempted thief got their friends to fight as a distraction, but all they could do was smash some glass before they got beat up by security and the store’s crew.

“Can’t believe this motherfucker tried to rob my store,” Baller laughed. “Bruh, bruh, listen.. It was a thought,” Q replied. “I’m not too stupid. I did a lot of dumb things and said a lot of dumb shit, been desperate at times, but we wasn’t that damn desperate. We was like, ‘There’s no way we going to pull this off.’ … We like, ‘We got two burners, that’s all we got… We really don’t want to use them, we not trying to go down for a homicide, too.'”

Looking back, he questioned why they ever thought they could have pulled it off to begin with. “It would have never fucking worked out,” he said. “Thank God, because we would have went down for way too long, we would’ve ended up probably dying.”
