I usually look to Drake as hip-hop culture's ultimate surfer, but in many ways Kanye's done an even more masterful job of riding new waves to maintain his relevance. In the last three years alone he's made sure to tap into as much youthful energy as possible, from Chief Keef to Travis Scott to Chance the Rapper to Young Thug to, of course, Desiigner.
So of course he's also had his eye on Migos, and every day brings more evidence that the rest of 2016 is going to be Migeezy Season. In February, we got a snippet of a song with Migos most prominently featuring Kanye sniffing lines of Miley Cyrus with Miley Cyrus. Then, in March, the trio was spotted in the studio with 'Ye allegedly working on his Turbo Grafx 16 album, which feels like it's going to become another Good Ass Job to me. And then in just the last few days, Quavo popped up on "Champions" and Migos claimed in an new interview with the U.K.'s Acton Entertainment that they had not one but "multiple songs" with Kanye that they were holding onto until the time is right.
It makes perfect sense. As Kanye increasingly moves away from his soul-sampling college days and becomes the kind of ultra-high energy artist who can spark a riot in New York City with the mere hint of a surprise show, who else is there for him to be working with than Migos? And by the sounds of it, that's going to mean not just Migos on a Kanye West project or two, but Migos returning the favor by buttressing Yeezy's upcoming music.
So when Cruel Winter finally drops and half the songs have a...Migos? Migi?...member or two on them, we can now all say we saw it coming.
